If you and/or your partner are of a larger stature it’s important to find a mattress that offers the comfort and support you need for a good night’s sleep.

If you’re heavier you may think that simply choosing a mattress with a higher spring count will ensure you have more support for your contours as you sleep.

However, this isn’t always the case and there are other things to consider before choosing a mattress. Also make sure you find a local retailer, so you can get expert advice and try and test a mattress for yourself.

Here are some of the key factors we think are important to consider when looking for the right mattress for heavier people.

Tested for extra support

Make sure to choose a bed that has been tested by the manufacturer to support your desired weight, whether that be individual weight or combined weight of you and your partner.

The Rest Assured 1400 Pocket Ortho mattress has been tested and met the British Standards Testing for plus size, which means it is suitable for use with an equally combined weight of up to 50 stone*.

Temperature regulating

If you feel the heat when you sleep you may want to avoid certain fillings such as memory foam which responds to body temperature and can make you feel warmer.  If you do get hot at night this could lead to an uncomfortable night’s sleep of tossing, turning and never feeling settled.

The Rest Assured 1400 Pocket Ortho mattress features a natural wool comfort layer along with breathable fibres to help to keep you at a comfortable temperature all night long.

Bigger is better

If you and/or your partner are on the heavy side it is especially important you get the biggest mattress you can fit in your room. Not only will this offer the most support, it also means a better night’s sleep as you have more space to move.

We wouldn’t recommend anything smaller than a double bed for one person weighing 32 stone.  If there are two people sharing the mattress you would ideally be looking at King and Super King mattresses to provide the room you need to really relax.
