A medical expert has advised people – especially women – to consider natural solutions to sleeping problems before turning to sleeping pills for help. Dr. Carol Ash, medical director of Sleep for Life in Hillsborough, New Jersey, said that many women experienced increasing difficulties in sleeping as they grew older. In an interview with myjoyonline.com, Dr. Ash said: "Just as eyesight or hearing begin to fail, the delicate mechanism in the brain and body that triggers and sustains sleep also begins to deteriorate." However, it is not always the best idea to request sleeping pills from the doctor, according to Dr. Ash. She advised women to examine their lifestyles, stress levels and habits first, to see if there were any improvements that could be made that would result in more restful sleep. Dr. Ash’s comments follow an article published on About.com, which advised people to avoid consuming certain foods and drinks before bedtime. Caffeine, spices and alcohol can all be barriers to a good night’s sleep, according to the article.
