Summertime link to child sleep disruption

01/06/2010

Experts have warned summertime can herald in a period of more disrupted sleep for many children.

Shelly Weiss of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children told the Toronto Sun youngsters tend to play outside for longer, disrupting mealtimes and other elements of their evenings.

The article says parents may need to alter their Childrens' patterns so they can still doze off at the right time in the evening when there is more daylight.

Dr Weiss said this can include altering eating patterns, as they are connected to child sleep habits.

She said: "Avoiding heavy meals late at night is also important because your gastrointestinal tract should be resting, not working, when you sleep."

The interior designer Jeanine Matlow recently said in the Detroit News parents should try to decorate children's bedrooms in a manner which can be easily altered and changed as a youngster grows up.
