Stress linked to disturbed sleep

30/06/2010

Tackling stress could be the key to busting sleep problems, an expert has said.

Jessica Alexander, a spokesperson for the Sleep Council, said stress can stop the brain changing from being awake into drifting off.

She added each person can find different techniques work for them, meaning a little experimentation could be required.

Ms Alexander said: "Some people meditate, but the old case of counting sheep is based on good reasoning.

"You do something so mundane and boring and it can block out other thoughts."

The expert also said one of the worst things a person can do is lay in bed worrying about problems that have come up during the day.

A recent study by Travelodge showed 75 per cent of the UK workforce are getting eight hours of sleep per night.
