Staying alert at school a problem for teenage girls

13/12/2011

Research has suggested that if teenage girls are to remain alert at school, they need to spend more time in bed. The Schools Health Education Unit figures show that of the girls in the 14-15 year-old age group, 48 per cent are not effective in school due to lack of sleep. With boys in the same age group the figure falls to 41 per cent.

Data shows that of the 12-13 year-olds, 80 per cent of them sleep for eight hours each night, but this figure drops as they get older. This figure compares to 66 per cent of 14-15-year- old boys and 61 per cent of girls in the same age group. The editor of parenting website Netmums.com, Cathy Ranson said the data should interest parents, especially as the teenagers admit their inability to remain alert and concentrate in school is due to lack of sleep.
