Sound sleep may be affected by bad habits

30/09/2011

An expert has suggested that a person’s night time activities could be just as much to blame as their mattress for their failure to enjoy a good night’s sleep. Mack Lipe, department director and instructor at Allegiance Health Sleep Health Centre, said it is possible for sleep hygiene to determine if they have a good or bad night’s sleep without them being aware of it.

He added that bed time consistency is important for a good night’s sleep and making the bed room as dark as possible is a good start. Stimulants such as nicotine, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided as using these in the evening prevents the body from relaxing so that it can sleep through the night without waking up. It is important for people to have enough sleep, he said, as this will ensure that they wake up refreshed having passed through all the stages of rest.
