Sleep disorders not the same as disturbances

01/04/2011

The so-called ‘Sleep Doctor’ (Dr. Adam Moscovitch) has urged the importance of distinguishing between sleep disturbances and sleep disorders.

There are around 85 known sleep disorders, such as insomnia and narcolepsy. The former often means it is difficult for a person to doze off in their bed, while they may also wake up at regular intervals, or not feel refreshed in the morning. The latter is a chronic sleep disorder, in which the sufferer spontaneously falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as at work or whilst in the middle of a task.

However, Dr. Moscovitch says these serious sleep disorders should not be confused with isolated disturbances that have a much less significant impact on the overall quality of an individual’s sleep and general health.

Sleep disorders, says Dr. Moscovitch, have “a significant impact - in a lot of cases, a measurable impact on the individual's physiological, psychological, educational or occupational functioning.”
