Research has found that children who suffer from diabetes and have poor sleeping habits may be at risk. The team from the University of Arizona discovered that it was more difficult for youngsters suffering from Type 1 diabetes to fall asleep at night. The sleep patterns of 50 children between the ages of ten and 16 years who suffer from Type 1 diabetes was tracked by the researchers and they found that they spend longer in the lighter stages of sleep than diabetic free children. The research which was published in the January edition of the journal Sleep also showed that among this group high blood sugar levels are more prominent. Michelle Perfect, the principal investigator in the study, explained that the children were sticking to the recommendations of good diabetic health in the majority of cases. She pointed out that sleeplessness can often be treated; which gives young people the opportunity to get professional help for their sleep problem.
