Parkinson's disease linked to REM sleep disorder

08/09/2011

Recent research has suggested a link between Parkinson’s disease and people diagnosed with REM sleeping disorder. During the study it was discovered that sufferers would regularly cry and scream in their sleep. This would cause them to wake up, leaving them feeling tired and listless. At the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona where the research was carried out, neurologist Alex Iranzo said that the level of the hormone dopamine which may lead to Parkinson’s disease was found to be lower in REM patients.

The results published in the Lancet of Neurology journal showed that the level of dopamine was 20% lower in patients suffering from REM sleep disorder. Another study that has just been concluded found that linking obesity in children to lack of sleep was inaccurate; children who slept well every night were just as likely to suffer from obesity.
