15/08/2011

Wearing compression stockings before going to bed could help people suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) it was announced by researchers. The daytime accumulation of fluid in the legs of chronic venous insufficiency patients was greatly reduced when they used the compression stockings, said the University of Brescia spokesperson Stefania Redolfi. She explained that the reason for this was the reduction of apnoeas and hypopnoea by more than 30% and this could only be beneficial to OSA sufferers.

Those wearing the compression stockings over an extended period of time were pleased to find their overnight leg fluid volume reduced by 62% more than the periods they did not wear them. Another statistic to come from the research was that for every hour of sleep, apnoeas and hypopnoea were reduced by 36%. The problem of neck circumference increase is also addressed by the wearing of the compression stockings, with a 60% reduction.
