NHS Could Save Millions With New Mattress

01/07/2010

The National Health Service could be saved millions of pounds after a revolutionary new design for hospital mattresses was cooked up by a Welsh inventor.

The mattress alleviates pressure on the body of slumbering patients, meaning there is less risk of bed sores, and will cost 70p per day for each hospital bed it is used on.

The intelligent design, as it is dubbed, has an added feature in that it will let doctors and nurses know when a patient has remained still for a lengthy amount of time, allowing them chance to see to the bed's occupant before sores can develop.

A reduction in such ulcers of between 20 and 60 per cent is the early estimated benefit for UK wards.

Entrepreneur Frank Edwards is the brains behind the scheme, and he was assisted by the Welsh Assembly government, as well as the country's top universities.

A mattress was recently sold by one US manufacturer for $44,000 (30,000), it has been revealed.
