New Zealanders not getting enough sleep, study shows

16/06/2011

New Zealanders are struggling to get enough shut-eye, according to the findings of a new study.

A survey commissioned by Sleepyhead shows that a massive 93% of people wake up during the night at least once, and nearly 50% wake up in the night to use the toilet.

Chris Taylor, general manager of Sleepyhead, said that aches and pains are one of the major factors in sleeplessness. He also said that a person’s disruptive actions during the night could cause their partner to wake up, concluding: "Considering how important sleep is and how much time we spend in bed , an awful lot of us are not sleeping that well."

Sleeplessness is not a problem confined to New Zealand: A recent National Sleep Foundation study found that 43% of Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 get fewer hours’ sleep than they really need on weeknights.
