New internet resource can improve children's sleep

11/04/2011

A new internet resource could put many parents' minds at ease, having considered whether children's beds offer their kids comfort and optimum rest.

The Customised Sleep Profile gives personalised sleep advice, tailored to individual mothers and children, concerning their bedtime routine.

The scientific journal Sleep has shown that mothers adopting the profile feel less tension, fatigue and depression. Additionally, they have enjoyed longer and more consistent hours of sleep.

Jodi Mindell, a professor of psychology at St Joseph's University, Philadelphia and co-developer of the tool, stated, "Most of the information available in print or online doesn't say specifically what you should do for your child”.

Columbia University scientists recently said that decreasing hours of sleep is directly related to rises in food-consumption as well as significant rises in saturated fat levels.

Bristol University researcher, Shahad Teheri, has suggested that mobile phones, laptops and televisions should be taken from children's rooms in order to achieve consistent hours of sleep.

Ultimately, the implementation of a bedtime routine, which is adhered to, is the first positive step towards adequate sleep for children.
