The International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology has published the results of a study that claims that maths tests results of teenagers who get enough sleep, are likely to be better. The research was carried out at the University of Granada and Junta de Andalucia in Spain. Almost 600 students aged 12 to 19 were asked to complete two questionnaires regarding the amount and quality of their sleep and their level of alertness, after which their performance was studied. It was found that the higher marks in the maths tests went to the students who had enough sleep, and they also did better in physical education. The times that students went to bed and woke did not seem to have any influence on the test results, but academic attainment was lower if they took longer to fall asleep. Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge have completed a study that found doctors who go without sleep can have their mental clarity improved by taking modafinil, a drug developed in the 1970’s.
