Lack of sleep in bed can lead to mental health problems

07/03/2011

Anyone who fails to sleep properly in their single or double bed may find that such a lack of rest has an impact on their mental health, according to the Great British Sleep Survey.

In research commissioned by the Medical Health Foundation, people who cannot rest were revealed to be three times more likely not to be able to concentrate. Meanwhile, insomniacs were found to be four times more likely to suffer from relationship problems and three times more likely to fall into low moods, while also seeing significant dips in their energy levels throughout the day.

Dr Dan Robotham, senior researcher at the Mental Health Foundation and lead author of the report, said that ''poor sleep can lead to mental health problems, and mental health problems can lead to poor sleep,'' and he indicated that too many people simply come to accept their sleep problems and do not act upon them.

"It is crucial that people are aware of the effective ways of breaking that spiral by improving the quality of their sleep," Dr Robotham commented.

The report suggested various measures to help promote better sleep and well-being, including wider local and national public health campaigns and providing doctors with the newest information regarding evidence-based sleep therapies.
