Researchers could be offered the chance to study the mysteries of consciousness through those people that enjoy lucid dreams when they are sleeping. Lucid dreamers are aware when they are having a dream, and have the ability to control their actions. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry recently studied lucid dreamers, and they believe that by analysing the patterns of brain activity, the outcome of dreams may be possible to predict. Michael Czisch, co-author of the study which was published in the journal Current Biology explained, lucid dreamers enter into a very complex state, they are sleeping, dreaming, but at the same time they are consciously aware of the dream. He added that this could give us an insight into the concept of consciousness. In September, researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, successfully decoded and reconstructed images from movie trailers they had watched, by using brain imaging. This could be used in the future to decode the thoughts and dreams of coma patients.
