Claims suggest that finishing evening meals at least two to three hours before hitting the mattress can help to avoid acid reflux. Staying away from acid producing food and drink, such as coffee or alcohol before drifting off on their memory foam mattress, can also aid sufferers of the condition, says Dr Martin Scurr. In his piece for the Daily Mail, Scurr stated that acid reflux is a common condition occurring in about 30% of adults. It arises when stomach acid travels in the wrong direction, back up into the oesophagus. The many measures he suggests to alleviate symptoms include raising the top end of the mattress or increasing the number of pillows suffers sleep on. Scurr goes on to highlight that there are a variety of medical options which can also help to assuage the problem. If ignored, acid reflux can lead to a condition called erosive oesophagitis, which is where the stomach acid can erode the protective lining of the oesophagus.
