Expert: insomnia 'wrongly diagnosed'

19/07/2010

Light sleepers failing to get proper rest in bed may be having their symptoms wrongly identified, according to one commentator.

Associated Sleep Services fatigue management specialist Carolyn Schur talked to the Vancouver Sun and said getting the right decision can be crucial.

She said sleep difficulties can often be caused by issues such as trauma, abuse or anxiety, adding many doctors can "tend to deal with insomnia as though it was one entity".

She also said: "We're starting to understand that the symptoms of not being able to sleep, not being able to stay asleep, and waking early are the criteria by which you diagnose insomnia."

Researchers from the University of Bologna recently examined a group of students who had crashed their cars and found 15 per cent of them thought the cause was sleepiness.
