Diabetes may be affected by lack of sleep

19/01/2012

The link between sleep and diabetes has long been the subject of debate among scientists, with a number of studies showing that the condition may be sparked by lack of rest. Boston University experts discovered that the risk of suffering diabetes if a person regularly sleeps less than five hours, may be doubled. Furthermore, it was reported in the Dail Mail that disruption to the circadian rhythm, popularly known as the ‘body clock’, is believed to trigger the onset of the disease.

Yale University conducted another study that found there may be a link between sleep apnoea and diabetes. It is possible that there may be a relationship between the increase in cortisol as a result of airways closure and a rise in glucose levels. Earlier this month, University of Arizona scientists stated that it is essential for children to get enough sleep. Children suffering from Type 1 diabetes struggle to control their blood sugar levels if they do not have a good sleep routine.
