A leading bed expert has stated that couples need to learn how to share a bed comfortably. Sharing a bed is "an achievement in co-ordination", author Paul C Rosenblatt told the Telegraph. Rosenblatt is the author of Two in a Bed: The Social System of Couple Bed Sharing. In his book, he stated that "Couples must learn to sleep together. "Where to put one's pillow; when to talk and not talk; when and how to touch each other; what to do if one partner wakes during the night, and so on." However, research from Northwestern University suggests that sleeping with a partner may be better physiologically then sleeping alone. Emma Adam has led a group of scientists in research which found that adults who hit their mattresses feeling lonely, sad or overwhelmed have increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, when they wake. Cortisol has been found to relate to a number of health problems including depression and obesity.
