The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that brownies sold in parts of the US have been found to be unsafe and were likely to be banned in the near future. The brownies are known as Lazy Cakes and have a hormone called melatonin in them. This hormone is produced naturally in the body to help people to fall asleep at night. The brownies have been tested and found to contain 24 times the amount of melatonin that would normally be prescribed. Another major concern was the packaging of the product. According to the FDA, the packaging was designed to attract children which could result in their health being affected if a child consumed them. In an interview with Fox News, Dr James Mowery pointed out that there could be a slowing of the breathing if the hormone was taken in high doses and this could cause a problem for small children.
