Before going to bed switch off

25/11/2011

One of the ways of improving the quality of sleep could be by switching off electronics before retiring for the night. The release of melatonin, a hormone the body releases to help regulate sleep, is known to be inhibited by light. Watching TV or staring at a computer screen could be affecting resting habits more than people realise, and they should be encouraged to change their bed time routines.

Experts recommend listening to music or reading a book, as they do not stimulate the brain to the same extent as watching TV. It is important that if one night is spent watching TV or working on the computer, there should be less the following night to restore order to the bed time routine.

Still on the subject of sleep disturbance, The American Academy of Paediatrics National Conference and Exhibition in Boston recently published research results showing that it is unlikely that sleep disruption experienced with breastfed babies will last longer than six months.
