Bedtime routine could help kids learn

07/06/2010

Children need to have regular bedtimes to help them learn effectively, research has suggested.

SRI International's study revealed four-year-olds in particular can benefit from development in literacy and maths from a set sleeping pattern.

The youngsters benefiting from routines were also found to be much more expressive in their language than those who do not stick to sleeping rules.

Erika Gaylor early childhood policy researcher for SRI International, said: "Paediatricians can easily promote regular bedtimes with parents and children, behaviours which in turn lead to healthy sleep."

She also said reading at bedtime is a good way of interacting with a child before sleep to make sure they settle down before drifting off.

Dr Tanya Byron, in an article for the Times, recently said parents need to make time in the evenings to read to children, as being close to them can help them to settle down.
