Baby's disrupted sleep pattern may not pass

12/01/2012

A recently published report may not ease your worries if your newborn baby is not settling at night. It has been found by experts from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre in Ohio that if a newborn baby suffers from sleeplessness it may continue into the child’s toddler years. The Paediatrics journal published figures showing that around one in three children have problems sleeping due to different conditions.

Kelly Byars, lead author and paediatric psychologist, said that often parents are told not to worry that this condition is normal and it will improve, unfortunately this is not always the case. Research indicates that you should get professional help sooner rather than later to improve your child’s sleep. The research found that as the child gets older the sleep problems may change, with children under two years old finding it difficult to fall asleep. The nightmares and restlessness become more prevalent by the time they are three years old. Establishing a bedtime routine is one way of helping then to know when to wind down.
