Australians sleeping less

15/08/2011

According to a survey recently conducted by the Sleep Health Foundation, many Australians are sleeping less than the time recommended by most health organisations. While the minimum time generally agreed on for sleep was eight hours, a large number of Australians were spending less than seven hours each night asleep.

Fewer than 20% of those surveyed said that they were unable to carry out their normal daily activities due a lack of energy. A major worry to come from the result was that 44% of 14 – 24 years old were waking up every day feeling that they needed more sleep. The AAP released results that showed insomnia affected 10% of those questioned and sleep interruption was caused by 19%.

The head of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital pulmonary physiology and sleep medicine department, Dr Hillman, was at pains to explain that sleeping less did not increase production. On the contrary it was more likely to decrease.
