A good night's sleep leads to sound mental health

13/06/2011

Experts have stressed a link between spending long enough in bed and sound mental health. It has been said that getting enough sleep is just as important for one's mental health as it is for replenishing energy.

Many recommendations have been put forward. These include avoiding caffeinated drinks, such as coffee before bed, as well as keeping an optimum temperature in the bedroom, as hot and cold environments can greatly affect a person's sleep.

A primary mental health team at the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) is hoping to promote the link through Mental Health Week, which runs from May 23rd until the 30th.

The group also suggested participating in exercises in order to use any of the body's excess energy, making it much easier to sleep at night.

Carole Hirst, RDaSH clinical director for psychological therapy services added: "Many people have problems sleeping, but the good news is there are lots of methods you can try to improve the amount of sleep you get and the quality of it."
