Men and women have different mattress needs

25/03/2011

Couples who find sleeping in the same double bed to be disruptive to sleep could find the problem originates in their choice of mattress .

In an article for the Daily Mail, Dr. Neil Stanley said that men and women tend to need different types of mattresses for optimum sleep – meaning that whichever mattress has been chosen for the couple’s double or king size bed is probably benefitting one partner’s sleep patterns at the expense of the other’s.

Dr. Stanley, who is an independent sleep expert, said: "Women in particular need a mattress that will support their curvier bodies, so a mattress needs to be soft enough to do this." Dr. Stanley went on to say that men – whose bodies tend to be straighter – usually need a more firm mattress for a good night’s sleep.

Another factor that could be influencing sleep quality is, curiously enough, financial status. A recent Understanding Society report revealed that well-off people tend to sleep better than those who are less financially stable. The best sleepers, according to this report, are married couples with a high level of education.
