Link between skin aging and sleep needs more research

13/12/2011

There has been very little research conducted into the belief that premature aging of the skin can be caused by lack of sleep. This is according to Dr Nick Lowe, a consultant dermatologist who said that this belief is not based on any scientific facts, but on speculation.  Speaking to the Daily Mail, he pointed out that an increasing number of people are suggesting that the skin prematurely ages due to lack of sleep.

The doctor emphasised that it has been shown it only takes a few weeks for the immune system to be negatively impacted due to lack of sleep. He noted that due to this, the damage done to the skin during the day is more difficult to repair. It was recently discovered by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine Sleep Centre in Houston, Texas there is a link between teenagers not having enough sleep and weight gain.
