Women wrongly claim to get less sleep than men

02/10/2009

Older women could be getting a higher amount of sleep than men even though they complain about getting less, research has suggested.

A study by the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam found that while older females may need more bed rest, they claim to be getting a poor night's sleep even though some of them are getting more than men.

The study, published in the journal Sleep, involved 956 people aged 59 to 79, with a slightly higher number of men than women.

Females said they had 13.2 minutes less shut-eye than men on average, but were actually getting 16 more minutes of bed rest which was also of a higher quality.

One man struggling with sleep lately is Owais Shah, the England cricketer who said in the Sun he ended up restless after his tackle in a warm-up football game on teamate Joe Denly put the opening batsman in hospital.
