Wayward mattress almost causes major road accident

09/09/2009

A double mattress recently nearly resulted in catastrophe rather than comfort when it was involved in a near-major accident in a Worcestershire town.

A Ford Transit tipper truck carrying the mattress shed its load on the Worcester-bound side of the A451, dumping it into the path of a woman driver in a Volvo who had to veer off course in order to avoid an accident, according to the Kidderminster Shuttle.

The van driver didn't stop and police are now looking for the owner of the vehicle, which has a sky blue cab and black drop sides.

PC Lee Halford, who is investigating the case, said: "Fortunately, no-one was hurt but this could have resulted in a serious collision and injuries, particularly if there had been a motorbike or bicycle following the truck."

The officer said he was appealing for witnesses, and quoted by the Shuttle, added: "If anyone saw what happened or noticed the truck before or afterwards, then I would urge them to get in touch."

Last month a 50-year-old from Andover, Hampshire, Robert Caton, admitted smashing his car into the side of his local Tesco and wrecking two cashier checkouts as part of a row over an undelivered mattress.
