Violent games not so mean on sleep

15/04/2010

A new study has suggested violent video games don't disturb sleep as much as some people previously thought.

The BBC reported on a study which appeared in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine which involved 13 males ged 14 to 18 with no current sleep problems.

The Flinders University of Adelaide then encouraged them to play Call of Duty 4 and March of the Penguins.

Michael Gradisar, the senior lecturer in clinical child psychology who led the research, said: "We purposefully chose a very tranquil film to contrast against the very stimulating effect of playing a violent video game in the hope of producing the greatest effect on sleep."

He also said experts were "surprised" that subjects who played the violent game did not take much longer to drift off.

Call of Duty 4's follow-up, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, attracted much criticism on its release due to a sequence involving a massacre in an airport that the player takes part in, although industry experts lauded the game as a hit.
