US concern over safety of children's beds

28/04/2011

A change in safety requirements in the US regarding children's beds is under-way in order to make beds safer for children and toddlers.

The changes, made to existing standards and methods used in children's beds, have been approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Perhaps one of the most important changes concerns the guard-rail running around the bed. The rail must now be a minimum of five inches above the toddler's mattress, and a warning label must be clearly visible.

In the UK, a safety code on the bed signifies whether the bed adheres to safety requirements and is up to required standards. The CSPC also stated that the slats and springs undergo severe testing, to ensure their quality and reliability.

Something else to consider is the quality of cots or children's beds when buying second-hand. Sometimes second-hand beds may be of poor quality, which can pose a health risk to a child.
