Parents should consider three major points when shopping around for the perfect mattresses for young children and babies, one expert has said.Sonya Lunder, senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group, told the Chicago Tribune that ensuring your young child gets decent sleep is one of the hardest parts of being a parent. She suggested mums and dads avoid vinyl, although many mattresses feature it as a way of resisting water.According to Ms Lunder, health and safety experts have said PVC can up the chances of asthma and liver problems. She also pointed out that mums and dads may want to ensure that beds are fire resistant as a matter of course.Other advice included not necessarily only sticking to organic materials, as the chances of pesticides transferring to children from cotton is unlikely, although cotton can be better than foam if parents are keen to avoid chemicals.Heather Corley of About.com has recently said that mattresses for cribs should be firm so babies are better able to move themselves around in bed.
