Sporty students 'face toughest sleep test'

27/08/2009

Students who play sport may have the toughest time when it comes to adjusting back to school sleep patterns, one expert has said.

Director of sports health at the Cleveland Clinic in Toronto, Tim Rindlisbacher, told the Canadian National Post that children are in for a shock when September arrives.

However, it's the more active children who arguably face the biggest challenge, he said.

He pointed out that a packed schedule of sports may mean a 24-hour day is too short for students looking to pack in everything else.

He advised children get to bed early and adopt a regular and even sleep pattern.

In order to give students the best chance of decent sleep he advised they "keep distractions like flashing clock lights, phone chargers or downloading laptops out of the room".

Mary Wagner, a sleep specialist at the University of Florida, recently told the Orlando Sentinel that school sleep patterns for children should start now to minimise the impact of the new term.
