South-west bed push begins

05/08/2010

A bed, mattress included, will be pushed for 120 miles by a group of 12 friends in the south-west of England this week, all for charity.

The Weston Mercury revealed that the epic journey begins at the Kings Arms pub in Easton-in-Gordano, from where the dynamic dozen will push a hospital bed and mattress, especially adapted for the purpose, all the way to Matherell in Cornwall.

Many of the participants have had their lives affected by cancer in some way, and the target is to raise 10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, the Friends of Bristol Haemotology and Oncology Centre and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

"The care I have received from the hospital doctors, consultants, St Peter's Hospice and my district nurses has just been amazing and I just wanted to give something back," Emma Derrick, one of the organisers, told the paper.
Coronation Street actor Steve Huison lent his support to a similar event that was recently held in Leeds.
