Sleep apnoea 'may harm your golf game'

04/11/2009

Sleep apnoea may affect your golf swing as well as your health, according to comments from one US expert.

New Jersey-based Dr Marc L Benton commented on the sleep disorder, which causes the airways to continually collapse during rest in bed, restricting the flow of air.

Dr Benton, from the Atlantic Sleep and Pulmonary Associates in Madison, said the problem could also cause golf lovers to fail on the course.

He said: "More so than many sports, golf has a strong intellectual component, with on-course strategising, focus and endurance being integral components in achieving good play."

He suggested those who find themselves displaying problems such as becoming unusually sleepy during the day may want to check with their doctor.

Dr Benton warned the problem can produce "effects which can negatively impact a person's ability to golf to the best of one's ability".

Golf's prestigious 2010 PGA Tour will begin with the SBS Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii on January 7.
