Sharing a bed may be bad for your health

10/09/2009

Sharing a bed may be good for romance but bad for couples' health, according to one expert.

Dr Neil Stanley announced at the British Science Festival that having two people in a bed can lead to disputes over tossing and turning, duvet theft, storing and other problems which can hit sleep heart.

Dr Stanley, of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, told newspaper the Daily Telegraph that the width of a normal double bed is 4ft 6" - this means an adult has 9" less in a double than a child sleeping in a single.

He also pointed out that couples have only shared beds since the industrial revolution and the practice first came about because of a lack of space.

He told the BBC: "It's about what makes you happy. If you've been sleeping together and you both sleep perfectly well then don't change, but don't be afraid to do something different."

The expert has spent most of his life studying sleep, and was the director of sleep research at the University of Surrey's Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit before his role in Norwich.
