School term sleep pattern 'should be enforced'

24/08/2009

Parents can better prepare children for school time sleep patterns by getting them to bed earlier before term starts again, according to one expert.

Mary Wagner, a pulmonologist and sleep specialist at the University of Florida, spoke to the Orlando Sentinel and said the change can be made now instead of just before school begins.

Akinyemi Ajayi, a paediatric sleep expert in Orlando, also said parents needed to make a concerted effort to try getting little ones up irrespective of what time they went to bed so they become tired earlier.

Ms Wagner also said parents should get children up earlier gradually, by half an hour earlier each day, and cut down on late distractions like games and films.

Bell Environmental Services also recently warned mattresses and bedding can also suffer thanks to the return of the school term due to children bringing bed bugs back from holidays away.
