12/04/2010

Scientists in America have warned children who don't get enough sleep are at a greater risk of becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs when they are adults.

The research in the states has linked inadequate sleeping patterns and high drug usage.

The team at Idaho State University discovered children who don't get enough bedrest between the ages of three and five may not only find it hard to get enough decent sleep as teenagers, but then find themselves with drink and drug problems as young adults.

Professor Maria Wong, who led the study, said: "Overtiredness in early childhood predicted lower response inhibition - that is, having problems inhibiting impulses and behaviour - in adolescence, which predicted higher numbers of illicit drugs used."

The American Thoracic Society (ATC) has also said the presence of the problem obstructive sleep apnoea the middle-aged males could result in a higher chance of having a stroke.
