Significant sleep disorders could have an even bigger impact on health than first thought, according to new research.A study run by Dr Naresh Punjabi at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore suggested sufferers of sleep apnoea and similar conditions are at increased risk of premature death.Men aged 40 to 70 who suffer from serious sleep disorders in bed are most at risk, according to the research.Sleep apnoea, which affects the upper airways and causes short pauses in breathing, can up the chances of having a stroke or suffering heart failure, according to the study.Ying-Hui Fu, professor of neurology at the University of California in San Francisco, has recently also discovered that many people need a lot less bed rest compared to others, with a few people needing way below the recommended seven to eight hours.
