Students in Pittsburgh have been donated beds, meaning they can get a decent night's kip for the first time.Around 93 per cent of students at Pittsburgh Schaeffer K-8 in Crafton Heights live below the poverty line, according to estimates. But 40 of them arrived home earlier this week to find they had a brand new bed, bed linen, and books. School principal Cynthia Zurchin said students suffering from the effects of not enough sleep had become a cause for concern among staff at the school. She said: "We would have some students come in in the morning and would literally fall asleep at the breakfast table - I mean, be out cold."The beds were donated by local businesses and community groups.Last month the Ledger said modern beds are now the epitome of comfort and luxury compared to beds of the past.
