19/04/2010

A lack of sleep could lead to increased weight, according to reports.

Leigh Anne Shapard of the Log Cabin Democrat research to her belief that not enough time spent asleep can cause a number of health problems, including weight gain.

She noted a fall in the amount of time you spend sleeping involves a drop a inleptin levels, which can prompt appetite and affect metabolism.

Ms Shapard said people who get to bed at an earlier time may see it make significant improvements to their health.

She said: "I'm setting a self-prescribed bedtime of 10 o'clock for the next few weeks to try this out. Not only will it surely help my frequent episodes of crankies, it may just help me lose the weight that I so desperately need to."

A new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care by Fujian Medical University in China recently said ear plugs and eye masks could help patients in hospital get a better night's sleep.
