Lying awake in bed 'does not help beat insomnia'

02/12/2009

Light sleepers who find themselves awake at night should not try to solve the problem by lying there waiting to drift off, one expert has said.

Dr Luisa Dilner, a Guardian sleep specialist, has said staying still in bed is one of the worst things you can do when it comes to battling a sleeping problem.

She suggests people actually get up and walk around outside the room to increase tiredness.

Lifestyle changes can help someone to avoid restless nights - alcohol and tobacco are known to affect sleep, for example.

Dr Dilner advised: "Check your bed is fit to sleep in and that you don't have so many pillows that you are actually sitting upright (not a good position for sleeping)."

Mama Do singer Pixie Lott, 18, recently confessed to missing her own mattress after fame reduced her sleeping opportunities.
