Lessons in sleep for Scottish youngsters

A council in Scotland is to join forces with a sleep specialist to help young people learn the value of good bed rest.

Newspaper the Herald reports the Glasgow City authority will introduce the scheme following concerns teenagers were unaware of the need for nine hours sleep to aid learning.

The schools involved include Govan High, Bellahouston Academy and St Paul's Secondary. All will get help from of Nikki Cameron, who will teach techniques in class.

She said students should not scrimp on sleep as surviving on less is not a blessing.

Ms Cameron told the newspaper: "Sleep is important for emotional and physical wellbeing and also for a young person learning, because that is when memories are processed, and the brain can store the learning."

Mums and dads concerned about their children not sleeping enough have been advised by the NHS to talk to them about any distracting concerns they may have.
