Less space in UK homes

19/09/2011

Figures recently released show that in the UK, the average size of a three-bedroom house currently being constructed is eight per cent smaller than the minimum recommended size.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) said that this was causing families to feel less comfortable as they have less space. The reduction in house size in many of the newly built homes is the equivalent of losing a small bedroom, which could be used for a single bed, wardrobe and a desk and chair.

The chief executive of RIBA, Harry Rich said that all over the country these cramped, shoebox homes are being built which is depriving families of the space they require to have a comfortable and cohesive life. Another surprising statistic revealed is that the average one bedroom home is only 93 per cent of what is the recommended. These reductions in space are depriving families of space that could be used for bedroom furniture.
