Kids beds guidelines welcomed in SA

28/10/2011

Experts in South Australia (SA) have issued a series of recommendations with regard to children’s beds. Mark Johns, who is state coroner, has advised parents that while it is fine to share a room with their infants, they should never share a bed. John Hill, the health minister said that many parents allow their child to sleep beside them thinking that it is the correct thing to do, when in fact there is a great amount of danger attached to the practise. Another important piece of advice is to remove excess bedding from the kid’s bed to lower the risk of suffocation.

Kerry Thomas, a research student at the University of Canberra recently advised new mothers that they could have an increased risk of suffering post-natal depression if they slept for less than six hours every night. She based her conclusions on more than 100 international studies, which showed links between sleep deprivation and depression.
