Experts warn against iPad in bed

10/05/2011

Health experts have recently warned iPad owners and users to avoid reading from the device in, or before, bed .

Differing from the Amazon Kindle, the iPad features a liquid-crystal display which gives off light and can disrupt things such as levels of melatonin, which the body regulates depending on the amount of light.

The Kindle uses e-paper technology, which mimics the pages of a book and does not emit any light whatsoever.

Some scientists, in fact, say that using the iPad in bed is comparable to watching television before bed , something which is extremely detrimental to both sleep and melatonin levels.

Charles Czeisler, Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women's Hospital stated: "This study reveals that light-emitting screens are in heavy use within the pivotal hour before sleep".

A 2011 Sleep in American poll from the National Sleep Foundation found that people of all ages were not getting adequate sleep due to using various forms of electronic media before bed.
