The Manchester United player spoke to the Sun and said he can only drift off when there is a constant noise in the background.

The player said he often needs something like a fan going in the room for him to catch a consistent doze.

He said: "If I'm staying in a hotel or I'm sleeping on my own I have the hairdryer on," adding he was unsure why he needed such noises to get to sleep.

Rooney even said he is known to lie on the floor while flying long-haul so he can get to sleep while listening to the engine sounds.

The forward is seen as a key player for England during this summer's world cup in South Africa, having been the nation's top scorer in qualifying.
