Dirty bed linen a haven for bacteria

02/08/2011

Not changing bed linen regularly is an invitation for bacteria to take hold and form colonies of up to two million, a new study has warned.

The SleepBetter.org Investigates: Fungus Among Us study shows that men’s pillows are twice as infested with bacteria as women’s, with an average of 480,000 bacteria compared with 290,000.

Most bugs live in mattress pads, according to the study. These can harbour as many as two million potential bacteria colonies.

Dr Lisa Shives, an expert in sleep medicine, commented: "Given the potential health issues associated with these microorganisms, this study should serve as a wake-up call for anyone with old bedding, whether or not in college, to throw them out."
