Clocks by the bed can keep you awake, expert says

28/09/2009

A humble bedside clock could contribute to insomnia sufferers' problems, according to one expert.

Susie Esthera, sleep disorder medicine specialist at Charlotte Eye, Ear Nose and Throat Associates, warns that a bright time gadget placed by the bed can add to the niggles which keep people awake at night.

In an interview with CNN she suggested several measures which people can take to try to guarantee an easier night.

She told the news provider: "You need to accept that you will arouse some, so reassure yourself in the middle of the night that nothing catastrophic will happen if you are awake for a while.

"Clock watching will only increase your anxiety about being awake."

The NHS has urged those suffering from sleep problems to address any potential underlying medical conditions before trying to deal with insomnia on their own.

Common advice for patients suffering with short-term insomnia includes developing a regular sleeping routine and ensuring they have a quiet, dark and comfortable bedroom.
